Residential & Commercial Painters in Aberdeen, SD
If you own a home in Aberdeen, you already know what this place does to paint. A January night that drops well below zero, a July afternoon in the 80s, and wind that rarely takes a day off. A paint job here doesn’t fail because the color was wrong. It fails because the prep and the product weren’t picked for Brown County.
We’re Black Mountain Painting, a South Dakota painting company. We paint interiors, exteriors, cabinets and brand-new homes, and we install epoxy garage and shop floors. Our crews work across the state, and Aberdeen gets the same standard we hold ourselves to at home: a written scope before we start, real prep before any paint goes on, and a walkthrough with you before we call it done.
We’ve painted dozens of homes in Aberdeen and the surrounding towns. We go wherever the work is in South Dakota, and we bring the same crew and the same standards to every job.

Painting Services We Offer in Aberdeen, SD
Exterior House Painting
Most exterior failures we see in this part of the state start with moisture getting behind old paint, then freezing. On every exterior painting job, we start with a pressure wash, then scrape and sand to sound coating, replace or fill soft wood, caulk the joints that move, and spot-prime bare areas before topcoats. We use exterior products rated for wide temperature swings and only apply them when the surface and overnight temperatures are inside the manufacturer’s range.
Interior Painting
Walls, ceilings, trim, doors and stairwells. Aberdeen homes run dry with the furnace going half the year, which shows up as hairline cracks at drywall seams and gaps along trim. On interior painting jobs, we fix those before we paint so they don’t telegraph through the new finish. Furniture gets moved and covered, floors get drop cloths, and the room goes back the way you had it.
Cabinet Painting and Refinishing
Cabinets take more abuse than any other painted surface in the house. For cabinet painting, we remove doors and hardware, degrease, sand, prime with a bonding primer and spray a hard-curing enamel. It’s a fraction of the cost of new cabinets, and done right it holds up to daily use.
New Construction Painting
We paint new homes for builders and owners who are building, as part of our residential painting services. That means coordinating with the drywall and trim schedule, checking the walls are actually paint-ready before we prime, and finishing on the timeline the closing depends on.
Epoxy Garage and Shop Floors
Aberdeen garages see months of snowmelt and road deicer tracked in on tires. Bare concrete soaks that up and starts to spall. For epoxy floors, we grind the slab, repair cracks and lay down a full epoxy system that sheds salt and water and cleans up with a squeegee.
Commercial Painting
Offices, retail spaces along Main Street, rental units between tenants. Our commercial painting services are scheduled around business hours so you stay open while we work.
Staining and Specialty Work
We also handle staining and deck staining, log home chinking, murals and parking lot striping. See all of our painting services.
What It Takes to Paint a House in Aberdeen
The weather sets the schedule
Aberdeen averages about 22 inches of precipitation a year, most of it in late spring and early summer, and nights fall below freezing on roughly 178 days a year. July highs average in the low 80s and January lows sit around 2°F. That spread is hard on any coating. Wood siding swells and shrinks, caulk joints get stretched, and any spot where water gets in will freeze and push the paint off.
For exteriors, that means a short season. Most exterior paints need the air and the surface to stay above roughly 35 to 50°F through application and the first night of curing, depending on the product. In Aberdeen that usually gives us a window from mid-May into early October. We book exterior work inside that window and watch the overnight lows, not just the afternoon high. Interior work and epoxy floors run year-round.
Older homes need a different kind of prep
Aberdeen grew up as a railroad town in the 1880s, and a lot of its housing shows it. The Hagerty & Lloyd neighborhood (the Aberdeen Historic District, around 3rd to 6th Avenues SE) is full of Queen Anne houses with layered trim, porches and spindle work. The Highlands Historic District along North Main between 12th and 15th Avenues has two-story homes built from 1907 on. Plenty of homes across town were built well before 1978.
Two things matter on homes like these:
- Lead-safe work practices. Any home built before 1978 may have lead paint under the newer layers. Federal EPA rules require a certified renovation firm and lead-safe methods when that paint is disturbed.
- Historic district review. Work on contributing properties in Aberdeen’s historic districts can require review through the State Historic Preservation Office, which starts with an application to the city’s Community Development Department. If your home is in one of these districts, ask us before you pick colors and we’ll help you check what applies.
Newer homes have their own issues
On the newer side of town, we see a different set of problems: builder-grade flat paint that scuffs if you look at it, nail pops and seam cracks as the framing settles through the first couple of winters, and garage slabs that start to pit after a few seasons of salt. Those are all fixable, and they’re a big part of what we do.

How a Job Works With Us
- You call or send a request. Tell us what you’re thinking about painting and roughly when. We’ll set a time to see it. Our owner Ben handles estimates, so you know you’re dealing with the top man.
- We look at it in person. We check the condition of the surfaces, test for moisture on exteriors, and note anything that needs repair before paint. You’ll know what we found and why it matters.
- You get a written estimate. It lists the surfaces, the prep, the products and the number of coats, with one price. If something changes once we start, we talk to you before doing any extra work.
- We prep, then paint. Most of the time on a good paint job goes into prep. Patching, sanding, caulking, priming and protecting your floors, furniture and landscaping come first.
- We walk it with you. Before we pack up, we go over the work together and fix anything you point out. The job isn’t finished until you’re happy with it.
Why Aberdeen Homeowners and Builders Hire Us
- We’re a South Dakota company. We work through the same winters you do, and we pick products and prep based on what holds up here, not in a warmer climate.
- One price, in writing. You get a detailed scope and a fixed price before we start. No hourly billing and no surprise charges at the end.
- Prep comes first. We’d rather spend an extra day scraping and priming than come back in two years to a peeling wall.
- Painting and epoxy under one roof. If you want the garage floor done while we’re painting the house, it’s one crew to schedule and one company to call.
- We clean up every day. Your home is livable while we work, and the site is swept and organized at the end of each day.

Painting Questions We Hear in Aberdeen
When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Aberdeen?
Usually mid-May through September, with early October possible in a mild year. The limit is overnight temperature, not the afternoon. Most exterior paints need the surface to stay above roughly 35 to 50°F while the coating cures, depending on the product. We check the forecast lows before every exterior day and won’t put paint on when a hard freeze is coming.
Can you paint inside during the winter?
Yes. Winter is a good time for interior painting and cabinets because our schedule is more open. We use low-odor products and keep a window cracked where we can, but your furnace does most of the work keeping things at a temperature where paint cures properly.
How often should a house in Aberdeen be repainted?
There’s no fixed number, because sun exposure, siding type and the last paint job all matter. Instead of waiting on a calendar, look at the south and west sides of the house every spring. Chalky residue on your hand, cracking along board ends, or paint lifting near the ground are signs it’s time. Catching it early is cheaper than replacing rotten trim later.
My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?
It can. Homes from that era may have lead paint under newer coats, and federal rules require certified lead-safe practices when that paint is sanded or scraped. Ask any contractor you’re considering whether they’re an EPA-certified renovation firm, and ask how they’ll contain and clean up the dust.
Do I need approval to paint a house in Aberdeen’s historic districts?
If your home is a contributing property in one of Aberdeen’s historic districts, exterior changes may go through a State Historic Preservation Office review that starts with the city’s Community Development Department. Call them before you settle on colors. We’re glad to help you figure out what applies.
Why does my garage floor flake every spring?
Most of the time it’s road salt and meltwater soaking into bare or poorly sealed concrete, then freezing. A one-part garage floor paint usually lifts the same way. A ground and properly coated epoxy floor holds up much better, because the salt and water stay on top where you can squeegee them out.
How much does it cost to paint a house in Aberdeen?
A lot goes into pricing: the size of the space, the condition of the surfaces and how much prep they need. That’s why we price every job in person and in writing. Most of our projects fall somewhere between $2,000 and $50,000. Painting a few rooms lands at the low end, while a full exterior on a large or older home with heavy prep lands at the high end.
