New Construction Interior Painting in Spearfish, SD

Black Mountain Painting painted the interior of this new-construction home on the north side of Spearfish, with views toward Crow Peak. Built in 2022, the nearly 4,000-square-foot home has six bedrooms, vaulted ceilings on both floors, and shiplap accents throughout. We painted the walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and shiplap during the original build, working alongside the builder to finish each space before flooring and fixtures went in.

The colors

The homeowners chose Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray for the walls, one of the most popular warm grays in the country. It sits between gray and beige, so it works with the home’s white oak floors, black window frames, and matte black fixtures without looking cold. With a light reflectance value of 60, it stays bright in big rooms while still reading as a color.

Ceilings are Sherwin-Williams Extra White, a clean white with a light reflectance value of 86. Keeping ceilings brighter than the walls makes the vaulted rooms feel even taller. Trim and interior doors are Cottage White, a softer white that ties the walls and ceilings together.

Walls and ceilings

The walls and ceilings have a knockdown texture, which can look blotchy if paint goes on unevenly. Every painted surface got a coat of primer followed by an eggshell finish coat, sprayed on and then back-rolled. Spraying gets paint into every part of the texture, and back-rolling evens out the coverage so the finish looks uniform in any light.

Trim, doors, and shiplap

The trim was primed before installation, then caulked and painted on site so every joint and nail hole disappears. The solid wood three-panel interior doors were painted Cottage White to match.

Shiplap shows up in several rooms, and each one needed clean lines where it meets the painted walls:

  • Great room: a white shiplap fireplace wall with a black I-beam mantle
  • Loft family room: a black shiplap fireplace wall that contrasts with the gray walls around it
  • Primary bedroom and bathroom: white shiplap ceilings

Painting a new build

On new construction, painting happens between drywall and the final finishes, so timing matters. We coordinated with the builder so each area was painted before flooring, cabinets, and fixtures went in, which is when walls and ceilings can be sprayed without masking finished surfaces. The result is a home that looks finished from the first day the owners move in.
