The Home

Powder House Pass is a mountain community between Lead and Deadwood, surrounded by ponderosa pine and close to Terry Peak. Homes here tend to be large, with open living spaces, high ceilings, and a lot of natural wood, which is exactly what this project involved.

With nine bathrooms and seven bedrooms, the job was less about any single room and more about keeping consistent color, sheen, and quality across dozens of spaces. That takes planning.

Interior Painting

We painted the interior throughout the home and handled the drywall repairs before the first coat went on. The crew filled nail holes and cracks and sanded glossy surfaces so the new paint would bond. The main color is Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee (OC-45), a soft, creamy white that keeps large rooms bright without feeling stark and sits comfortably next to the home’s natural wood ceilings.

Wallpaper

We installed a textured charcoal wallpaper on the vanity wall of the primary bathroom. Each wall was primed first so the seams stay tight and the paper can be removed cleanly in the future. The dark texture gives the room a focal point and contrasts with the white walls, marble counters, and brass hardware.

Wood Staining

The home’s staircase was stained Java, a deep espresso brown. The dark finish gives the staircase weight against the Swiss Coffee walls and ties into the charcoal window walls in the great room. Interior wood in the Black Hills dries out in the winter air, so fresh stain also protects it from cracking and fading.

How We Handled A Home This Size

A crew of four finished the painting, staining, and drywall work in one week. Keeping one color and sheen consistent across seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and a two-story great room meant working through the house in a planned order. Floors, fixtures, and furniture were covered every day, and each area was cleaned before we moved on.
